USMNT Burner Week Recap/Preview - 6/4/26 - Vol. 61
“Guys, check out the latest Burner Substack”
USMNT vs Germany Preview
After the USMNT’s 3-2 win over Senegal on Sunday afternoon, spirits are high amongst supporters for the first time in a while. The Burner was unable to watch the match against Senegal so we will not be providing as recap of the match. But, goals from Christian Pulisic, Sergino Dest and Folarin Balogun gave the US all they needed to secure a win over a really solid side in Senegal.
Now, the US must shift their focus to their match with Germany which will be played in front of a sold out crowd at Soldier Field in Chicago, Illinois. The USMNT is looking for the first win over the Germans since 2015 when a Jurgen Klinsmann led side won 2-1, just a year after Germany won the World Cup, for a famous victory. The goalscorers that night were Mix Diskerud and Bobby Wood. For Diskerud, it would be the last goal he scored for the national team.
The two sides last met in 2023, where the German’s ran out 3-1 winners in Hartford, Connecticut. Despite the US scoring first through Christian Pulisic, the German’s proceeded to score three unanswered goals through Ilkay Gündogan, Niclas Füllkrug, and Jamal Musiala. Of whom, only Musiala has been included in the Germany squad for the 2026 World Cup.
But now, just the game against Germany stands between the United States and their first match of the highly anticipated 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Germans will likely play a similar line up to the one which dismantled Finland, 4-0 on Sunday. With this being the last game for both teams before the World Cup, we expect this game to have a good tempo to it but it will likely lack that physical edge that we may normally see. No players want to get injured in the final tune up game.
It will be interesting to see how Pochettino chooses to line up the USMNT for this match. Will he start a similar lineup from that of the Senegal game? Will he go for a wholesale change at halftime again? One would think, with this being the last match before the big show, he would start the line up that we will see in game one against Paraguay. As we write this, news just broke that Chris Richards will not be available for the match against Germany. A blow for sure, but it is so important that Chris is ready to go for game one. Nothing would change the narrative behind this team like a win over Germany. It would provide the team with encouragement and the general populous a sense of hope.
But even more important than a win, no more injuries.
It is starting to feel real now.

Burner’s Star of the Week
⭐️: Christian Pulisic
Captain America, starboy, Puli - it doesn’t matter what you call him. He’s back. After a second half of the season at Milan that was colder than a witch’s tit in a brass bra, he came out hot against the rightful African champions in Senegal to show he’s ready for a World Cup on home soil. Pulisic contributed to 2 of our 3 goals on the day with an early assist to Sergino Dest and adding his own later in the 20’. He was the guy the USMNT looked to in the first half before the heavy rotations and he found himself in good areas of the field which should translate well when the group stages come around. Go get some grilled chicken and save your tendies until after the World Cup, Christian you are our Raising Canes Player of the Week!
